How to QC a MacBook before you buy: a practical checklist

A MacBook is a big purchase, and a few minutes of checking can save you from an expensive mistake. Whether you buy from us or anywhere else, here is the exact quality-check (QC) routine our team runs on every device — do the same and you will buy with confidence.

1. Verify it is a genuine Apple device

Check the serial number under Apple menu → About This Mac and confirm it on Apple's "Check Coverage" page. The serial there should match the one printed on the underside of the MacBook. This confirms the model, year and that it is a real Apple unit.

2. Check Activation Lock and Find My

Make sure the previous owner has signed out of iCloud and removed the device from Find My. Go to System Settings → your name → Find My. A locked device is unusable — never pay before this is cleared.

3. Battery health and cycle count

Open System Settings → Battery → Battery Health for the maximum capacity, and About This Mac → System Report → Power for the cycle count. Apple rates modern batteries for about 1000 cycles; a low cycle count with 85%+ capacity is healthy.

4. Display

Look for dead or stuck pixels, backlight bleed and scratches. Show a full-white and a full-black image and inspect closely. Check that brightness ramps smoothly from low to high.

5. Keyboard and trackpad

Type in a text field and press every key. On the trackpad, test click, right-click and multi-finger gestures. Force Touch should feel consistent across the whole surface.

6. Ports, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Test each USB-C/Thunderbolt port with a charger and a device. Connect to Wi-Fi and pair a Bluetooth accessory to confirm the wireless card works.

7. Camera, microphone and speakers

Open Photo Booth to check the camera and mic, and play audio to confirm both speakers work without distortion.

8. Storage and performance

Confirm the advertised storage in About This Mac → Storage, and run a quick task to make sure the machine feels responsive and does not overheat or throttle under light load.

9. Physical condition and paperwork

Inspect the chassis, hinge and screen bezel for dents or cracks. Insist on a GST invoice with the serial number and a written warranty — this is your proof of purchase and protection.
